Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a psychologist, a psychotherapist and a psychiatrist?

In Italy, a psychologist holds a MSc in Psychology and has taken the Board Exam that allows to practice psychological counselling and psychological support. In the case of private activity, the psychologist must also subscribe to the regional Board of Psychologists (Ordine degli Psicologi).

A psychotherapist is a licensed psychologist or a licensed MD who has undertaken an additional four-year (or five in some cases) specialization at a training school recognized by the MIUR (Ministry of University and Research).

The psychiatrist is a licensed MD who has undertaken a four or five years specialization in psychiatry. The psychiatrist or a psychotherapist with a medical degree can prescribe a pharmacological therapy, whereas a psychologist (even if holding a specialization in psychotherapy) cannot.

Can I deduct the cost of the sessions?

Yes, if you pay taxes in Italy psychoterapy and psychological counselling are considered health care consultations and thus expenses can be deducted from taxes as "general medical expenses". In order to be deducted, they must be paid with a traceable paying method (e.g., bank transfer or credit card payment).

How long does a session last on average?

Individual sessions usually take 45-50 minutes. Couple sessions usually take about 90 minutes. In the event that specific techniques are used or a psychodiagnostic assessment is carried out, it is possible that more time is required, which will be agreed in the specific case.

How long will my counseling journey or psychotherapy take?

Each situation is unique. Each of us comes from different experiences and functions differently. It is not possible to establish in advance how long this work could take, but usually an improvement can be noticed already in the first months. We will periodically update on how we are doing with regards to the goals of our work. Keep also in mind that in order to achieve significant and lasting changes it is important to consolidate the gains after the first signs of recovery.
